I knew of vague plot points in Spring Awakening, and I had been listening to the music for a good three years but it wasn’t until this weekend that everything clicked. We have to see plays performed at my college for an introduction to acting class I’m in, and I immediately jumped at the chance to see Spring Awakening. Sadly, it was not the musical version, but I was excited nonetheless. It was pretty good (though a tad confusing), but it wasn’t until I came home and re-listened to the music that it all made sense.
Songs that I once hummed along to without much thought now pulled at my heartstrings and brought me close to tears. I’ve always felt that music can capture something that simply speaking words cannot, but I came to a new realization- an explanation for why I love musicals so much. Neither the songs nor the play has as strong of an impact on its own, but together… together a song accompanying a particular scene can create for the audience an extremely powerful and emotional experience.
